Maybe it\u2019s a bit of a stretch to say that everyone who runs has a goal\u2026 but that\u2019s my opinion, and I don\u2019t think it\u2019s that far off.<\/p><p class=\"translation-block\">If you run with a goal, great.<br>If you run without one, then your goal is exactly that\u2014not having one\u2014and that\u2019s great too.<\/p><p>Looking for a simple definition of a goal, I found the following in the literature: \u201cwhat an individual is trying to accomplish; the object or aim of an action\u201d (Locke, Shaw, Saari, &amp; Latham, 1981, p. 126), and \u201cto attain a specific level of proficiency, usually within a specified time limit\u201d (Locke &amp; Latham, 2002, p. 705).<\/p><p>In my case, ever since I laced up my trainers in April 2019, my goal has been to break 1:24 in the half marathon.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-inner-section elementor-element elementor-element-1fa752f elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"1fa752f\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-inner-column elementor-element elementor-element-8766cb8\" data-id=\"8766cb8\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-53d8329 elementor-widget elementor-widget-video\" data-id=\"53d8329\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-settings=\"{&quot;video_type&quot;:&quot;hosted&quot;,&quot;controls&quot;:&quot;yes&quot;}\" data-widget_type=\"video.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-hosted-video elementor-wrapper elementor-open-inline\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<video class=\"elementor-video\" src=\"https:\/\/buddypacer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/IMG_0454.mov\" controls=\"\" preload=\"metadata\" controlslist=\"nodownload\"><\/video>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2e46cff elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"2e46cff\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h2 style=\"text-align: left;\">Why Goals Matter So Much<\/h2><p>Science backs this up \u2014 and I\u2019m not just saying it because it sounds good. Setting goals is one of the most powerful drivers of personal development. Challenging goals lead to higher performance than easy goals, having no goals at all, or vague \u201cdo your best\u201d goals (Latham, 2009).<\/p><p>My personal best in the half marathon was 1:40, so for me, 1:24 already felt hugely ambitious. Could I have aimed higher? I doubt it. But the biggest lesson running has taught me isn\u2019t the time you hit. The real challenge isn\u2019t starting to run\u2014it\u2019s keeping it going, day after day, month after month, year after year.<\/p><p>And it\u2019s not just me saying it: consistency is the biggest barrier for most runners (Franken, Bekhuis &amp; Tolsma, 2022).<\/p><h2 style=\"text-align: left;\">Intrinsic Motivation: The Invisible Fuel<\/h2><p>In my case, intrinsic motivation has been key: I wanted to run fast, feel strong, and feel good in my body. Self-Determination Theory (Ryan &amp; Deci, 2000; 2017) explains that when we run for internal reasons\u2014enjoyment, personal growth, or wellbeing\u2014we\u2019re more likely to stick with the habit long-term.<\/p><p class=\"translation-block\">When there are no clear goals, that intrinsic motivation fades; we lose touch with our values and with the \u201cwhy\u201d behind our running. The literature backs this up: a lack of clear goals is one of the main barriers, along with low self-esteem, fear, or a lack of <a href=\"https:\/\/buddypacer.com\/en\/por-que-pospones-salir-a-correr-y-como-evitarlo\/\" target=\"_self\">social support<\/a> (Collazo-Casti\u00f1eira et al., 2025).<\/p><h2 style=\"text-align: left;\">The Post-Goal Slump<\/h2><p>Interestingly, my biggest motivation slumps have come right after hitting a goal. I\u2019m not the only one\u2014many runners say the same.<\/p><p class=\"translation-block\">This year, I stopped the clock in Getafe at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.strava.com\/activities\/13455867942\/best-efforts\" target=\"_self\">1:24:48<\/a>. You could say goal achieved. Not every day we know exactly what we\u2019re aiming for\u2014and that\u2019s okay. But having a daily training goal, even a small one, helps keep motivation up.<\/p><p>If you already have a goal, share it. If you don\u2019t, join another runner\u2019s goal that fits your schedule, pace, and location.
